Jeans for Genes
Ever since Brooke Shields stood up to Tom Cruise for his ridiculous comments about her use of anti-depressants to treat postpartum depression, I’ve been impressed by her intelligence and grace. She’s even helping out Jeans for Genes, a UK charity which helps to raise money for research into genetic disorders affecting children - a pair of her crystal-studded jeans sold for $10,000 at a charity auction. Jeans for Genes Day 2005 will be held on October 7th. Net proceeds from the event will go to:
- The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign will fund essential research into a very rare form of muscular dystrophy called Emery Dreifuss.
- Rett Syndrome Association UK will fund the largest study of geneotype correlations into Rett syndrome. A second Jeans for Genes funded project will explore the possibility of therapeutic approaches to Rett syndrome.
- SPARKS will fund a project researching risk factors causing spina bifida. If successful this project will enable doctors to identify and treat women at risk of having a baby with spina bifida.
- The Genetics Interest Group will fund a Project Officer to work with six of GIGs smallest member groups to create Family Route Maps, which will provide guidance for good practice in support and service delivery.
- Starlight Childrens Foundation will grant 10 wishes to 10 very brave children affected by some of the most serious and life threatening genetic disorders.
I generally don’t like to wear jeans, but for this worthy cause, I may make an exception. For ways you can help, go to the Jeans for Genes website.
