Genetic Discrimination from the Republican Perspective
With all the flak President Bush and fellow Republicans are getting for supporting intelligent design, it’s good to know that not all conservative politicians think science is a threat to religion.
Over at the Diaries section of Redstate.org, a Republican community weblog, dissension in the ranks wrote about the Republican Party’s position on genetic discrimination.
The only way to eliminate the threat of Genetic Discrimination is through a comprehensive federal ban against the use of your personal, private, genetic information to discriminate against you and your family.
President Bush believes that it is inherently unfair to deny insurance or employment to Americans who are healthy but have a genetic predisposition for a condition that may never develop. Without legislation, individuals do not have complete and certain protection against genetic discrimination.
Now is the time for the Republican Party to seize the issue of preventing Genetic Discrimination, stop the negative spin that Republicans are a Luddite party opposed to scientific advancement, and show that they are the party for the responsible use of science, the party who recognizes that every new technology brings with it a dark side that must be guarded against misuse.
It’s a well-argued post bringing up a key point that I make often here at the Genetics and Public Health Blog: genes are not deterministic; to discriminate based on genetic make-up would be misguided. Whether you’re on the left or the right, don’t let politics stop us from achieving a greater understanding of science and each other.
