Tangled Bank #35: Science and Medicine Blog Posts

The Tangled Bank

Dave and Margaret Munger of Cognitive Daily are hosting this edition of Tangled Bank #35. If you’re interested in the more political side of science, such as the evolution vs. intelligent design debate, you can read those submissions at Dave’s personal blog, Word Munger.

In addition to my post on the importance of using mice in genetics research, other related Tangled Bank posts are:

  • A book review of Endless Forms Most Beautiful by Sean Carroll. As Krauze of Telic Thoughts wrote,

Carroll is one of the pioneers in the new field that has developed in the interplay between evolutionary and developmental biology, also known as “evo devo”, and Endless Forms is a good introduction for the interested layman. A prominent theme is the surprising conservation of the genes used to construct animal bodyplans, or, as Carroll repeatedly puts it, how very old genes have been taught new tricks.

  • A discussion of the misuse of animals in research at 10,000 Birds. Mike says,

…just as you have to break a lot of eggs to make an omelet, you may have to hard-boil, poach, or scramble a lot of animals to make a scientific breakthrough.

Lots of interesting and thought-provoking science writing to keep us busy for a while.
