American Public Health Association Meeting Moved From New Orleans
New Orleans
This year’s American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting was scheduled to be in New Orleans during November. The meeting will now be moved along with conferences for the 3rd International Conference on Cancer on the Internet and the National Public Health Information Coalition among others.
The APHA addressed several questions about this year’s annual meeting and exposition on their New Orleans Update page:
Why can’t APHA just take the money people sent in for the meeting as registration and donate it or give the money we would have spent on the meeting to help with relief?
First, the money we would have spent comes entirely from the registration and exhibitor fees that cover the direct costs of the Annual Meeting and subsidize other APHA activities. Second, APHA received registration fees by people contracting for a service. To use that money for another purpose would be inappropriate. Third, many registrants fees are paid by their employer and may not be used for purposes other than attending the Annual Meeting. It is more appropriate for people to make their own decisions to support this tragedy through the professional relief organization of their choice. We urge all our members to be as generous as possible.
Most scientists will visit New Orleans at some point in their conference-attending career. May they have the opportunity to share knowledge there in the future as well as enjoy the unique culture of New Orleans.
