Neurofibromatosis and Blog of the Week: YvonneFoong.com
If you’d like to have your blog featured in this weekly series, please leave a comment below.
This week’s featured blog is the eponymously-named YvonneFoong.com. Yvonne is a 19-year-old Malaysian with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) who has recently been struggling to raise the funds needed for surgery to save her hearing, facial, and balance nerves.
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine,
Neurofibromatosis is a condition in which noncancerous tumors called neurofibromas grow along nerves in the skin, brain, and other parts of the body. The two main types of neurofibromatosis can be distinguished by the locations of the tumors and by genetic testing.
Yvonne’s eloquence, knowledge, and zeal to help the neurofibromatosis community in Malaysia are impressive. One of her many efforts is the NF Malaysia blog “providing support to patients, families, and friends of neurofibromatosis”.
An aspiring poet and writer, Yvonne blogs about more than just NF on her personal blog. While Yvonne has every right to be depressed about her health status, she radiates positivity and hope instead. YvonneFoong.com is not just a glimpse of what life is like with chronic illness, it is also a glimpse into life in Malaysia, a country that many may not be familiar with.
