Matt Damon’s DNA For Sale

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on September 13th, 2005

As of the writing of this post, you have 2 days 10 hrs left to bid on the remnants of a cream puff that Matt Damon supposedly ate plus the fork and plate he used. The seller suggests that DNA could theoretically be retrieved from these items and used for cloning another Matt Damon.

According to Genelex,

DNA can be typed from saliva deposited on envelope flaps or stamps, as was done in the New York World Trade Center bombings. It can also be taken from cigarette butts found at crime scenes, and even from cups, bottles, telephone mouthpieces, bite marks and penile swabs.

If I were going to steal someone’s DNA, I’m not sure it would be Matt Damon’s. I think I’d much rather preserve the DNA of a beloved relative or friend.

Whose DNA would you like to have?

United Press International, September 12, 2005

Update: The listing has been removed by eBay.

glo, HAHA Personally, I don’t think either of them are all that. If I had to choose a male celebrity…Tom Hanks would be my guy!

    on second thought, Mel Gibson!
Anyway, seriously…I don’t understand why somebody would even post someone’s DNA (even if they’re celebrities) for sale anywhere…

  • Genetics and Health » Collecting Celebrity DNA is a No-No

[…] For anyone hoping to make a dime or a few thousand dollars off of celebrity DNA either by selling their half-eaten food (Britney and K-Fed’s corndog anyone?) or hair, it will become illegal in the UK on September 1, 2006 to take a sample of someone’s DNA for analysis without their explicit consent. The Human Tissues Act requires that anyone removing or storing body parts, organs or tissue must have prior consent. It will apply to everyone from medical scientists working on diseased tissues to surgeons removing organs from a recently deceased person or museums or exhibitions displaying human body parts. […]

[…] This isn’t the first nor will it be the last time someone tries to sell a celebrity’s DNA. Last year, we had Matt Damon then there was Britney and K-Fed’s corndog. Warning to bidders wishing to extract Jessica Simpson’s DNA: It’s undoubtedly contaminated by now looking at how the seller is handling it with his BARE HANDS. So if you decide to clone, don’t be surprised if you end up with a male ape. […]
