Saliva-Based DNA Testing
There are a number of ways to collect DNA samples including blood draws and cheek cell swabs. As yesterday’s auction of supposed Matt Damon DNA from a half-eaten cream puff showed, DNA can also be obtained from saliva.
Avitar, Inc. announced on Tuesday that they have received a patent for their oral fluid collection device.
“There is a definite market need for lower cost, more reliable and non-invasive solutions for DNA testing and early disease diagnosis,” said Pete Phildius, Chairman and CEO of Avitar. “On-site oral fluid testing is emerging as a lower cost, more convenient alternative to traditional laboratory blood or urine testing for in-vitro diagnostics applications.”
Now if only someone could come up with an easy way to filch DNA off of the half-eaten food of celebrities.
