Congratulations 2005 MacArthur Fellows!

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on September 20th, 2005

Looks like it’s awards season and a good time to get a feel for the amazing work scientists are doing all over the world. The MacArthur Foundation just announced the 2005 MacArthur Fellows who will each receive $500,000 “no strings attached” support over the next five years.

MacArthur Fellows are selected for their creativity, originality, and potential. By providing resources without stipulations or reporting requirements, the MacArthur Foundation offers the opportunity for Fellows to accelerate their current activities or take their work in new directions. The unusual level of independence afforded to the Fellows underscores the spirit of freedom intrinsic to creative endeavors.

One of the 2005 MacArthur Fellows is Dr. Olufunmilayo Olopade, professor of medicine and human genetics at The Cancer Research Center of the University of Chicago. She and her lab have been studying tumor suppressor genes, specifically TSG9 on the short arm of chromosome 9 (9p21). The CDKN2 candidate gene has also been mapped to 9p21 and is believed to play a role in regulating the cell cycle. This section of chromosome 9 appears to be deleted in a wide variety of tumor types, especially glioma, lun, bladder, and breast cancers.

Congratulations, Dr. Olopade!
