Chromosome 2 and Hypertension

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on September 28th, 2005

More news from the 59th Annual Fall Conference and Scientific Sessions of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research - a region on chromosome 2 appears to be associated with a person’s response to blood pressure medications.

“We discovered a region in chromosome 2 that is linked to a specific type of high blood pressure which doesn’t respond to two commonly used blood pressure medications,” namely ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, said lead researcher Sandosh Padmanabhan, a specialist registrar at the British Heart Foundation in Glasgow, Scotland.

The goal is to develop personalized medicine for patients with high blood pressure using genetic and other information. Dr. Vasilios Papademetriou, a professor of medicine at Georgetown University said,

Do not hold your breath, however, that the issue of uncontrolled hypertension will be significantly impacted.

All the other issues that lead to poor control of hypertension still need to be taken under consideration, including patient compliance, patient and doctor education, the cost of medicines, and testing and side effects.
