COB1 Gene and Overeating
Scientists at Myriad Genetics recently found that people with hyperphagia, an overeating disorder, are more likely to carry an abnormal version of the COB1 gene. The specific function of this gene is still unknown but it’s believed to play a role in insulin signaling which influences appetite control.
The participants in this particular study also had early-onset type 2 diabetes which frequently involves obesity. So the COB1 gene may be one of the reasons some children are more susceptible to excessive weight gain and the subsequent increase in risk of type 2 diabetes.
Melissa at The Parenting Weblog gives some useful links for learning more about obesity in children.
