Mental Health and Blog of the Week: Dr. Deborah Serani
If you’d like to have your blog featured in this weekly series, please leave a comment below.
This week’s featured blog is Dr. Deborah Serani: Psychological Perspectives. Dr. Serani scooped me on a piece of genetics news last week about the association between the apoptosis protease activating factor 1 (Apaf-1) gene and major depression.
One does not have to be trained in genetic science to know that this breakthrough validates depression as real… not a result of a lazy, weak or fragile character.
Dr. Serani is a trauma psychologist for the New York Disaster Counseling Coalition and for Project Liberty’s Counseling Unit for the FDNY, and the American Red Cross September 11 Recovery Program. She’s also a consultant with the American Psychological Association Media Referral Service, and the Mental Health Media Partnership and an adjunct professor at Adelphi University. Perhaps her coolest job is as a technical advisor for the television series Law & Order:Special Victims Unit.
Filled with mental health tidbits ranging from Q&A’s, famous psychology quotes, and information on optimizing mental health, Dr. Serani’s blog is also humorous and inspirational. I especially like that she takes the time to answer reader comments.
If you’re looking for the latest on mental health news from the perspective of a practicing psychologist, Dr. Deborah Serani is a good place to start.
