Post-Mortem Diagnosis Using DNA from Baby Tooth

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on November 1st, 2005

Fourteen years after a seven-year-old girl died of mysterious causes, scientists extracted DNA from a keepsake baby tooth her parents kept. DNA analysis showed that she died of Rett syndrome, a neurological disorder.

[Dr. Helen] Leonard said the confirmation of a definite diagnosis erased years of worry for the family.

“Not knowing what was causing their daughter’s illness, her parents began to wonder if they were somehow responsible.”

Baby hair and teeth may be more than just mementos.
