Learning Genetics at Sacred Heart Academy
If my high school had been as well-equipped as Sacred Heart Academy with motivated science teachers and a DNA sequencer, I wonder where I’d be today?
At the annual Genomes, Medicine and the Environment Conference in October, students from Sacred Heart Academy presented the results of their DNA sequencing study of three bovine genes that have been associated with osteoporosis in humans: vitamin D receptor gene (VDR), the calcitonin receptor gene (CALCR) and the collagen receptor gene (COL1A1). Data for the CALCR and COL1A1 genes have been included in the the National Institutes of Health’s genetic sequence database GenBank.
Well done, future scientists!
