Chin Up! The Genomic Revolution is Still Going Strong
Sharon Begley of The Wall Street Journal wrote this pessimistic piece on gene-targeted drug development last week.
One can only hope that translates into drugs. It’s hard to escape the feeling that, when it comes to using genes to predict or target disease, things are way more complicated than anyone thought.
As I often point out (and Alan Packer agrees), while we may talk about personalized medicine as if it’s going to happen in the immediate future, our world becomes more complex the more we learn. So it’s going to take time to develop the right drugs taking into account the right genes; there’s genes, environment, and genes x environment. The magnitude of complexity can be overwhelming but that doesn’t mean we should give up trying.
I have faith that innovative scientists will continue to develop new technologies which propel genomics/genetics forward at high speed, just as Kary Mullis did with the invention of polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
GENOME KNOWLEDGE IS A HOCKEY STICK…
IT BOUNCES ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE GRAPH…
FOR DECADES…
AND SUDDENLY EXPLODES
UPWARD.
