L-Methionine Affects DNA Methylation

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on November 17th, 2005

In addition to changes in the sequence of DNA itself, the addition or subtraction of methyl groups to DNA also affects gene function. Randy Jirtle and colleagues at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina have found that rats who were injected with L-methionine, a common amino acid supplement, permanently changed their behaviors. It appears that the amino acid methylated the glucocorticoid gene and altered its expression.

These results were observed in rats, but it’s possible that drugs or dietary supplements in humans may also permanently change the way genes work with either positive or negative consequences. In fact, L-methionine is a common supplement taken by some for its purported antioxidant and fat detoxification effects.

If the exact biochemical pathways from genes to proteins can be determined for some of the most important nutrients we ingest, we can look forward to adjusting our diets more precisely in order to achieve optimal health.
