Neuroblastoma and Blog of the Week: Noah Nelson
This week’s featured blog is Noah Nelson written by Noah’s grandmother. Noah is a five-year-old boy who was diagnosed in March 2005 with neuroblastoma stage IV that originated with a tumor in his abdomen, which later metastasized into his bone marrow, ribs, knees, and eye sockets. This past week, Noah was finally allowed to go home after four weeks in the hospital receiving his final round of chemotherapy.
Noah’s grandmother gives readers a detailed look at the medical treatment involved in fighting cancer. In addition to neuroblastoma, Noah has experienced pneumonia along with gastric and hepatic diseases as complications of stem cell transplant and immunosuppression. It is heartbreaking to think that a preschooler has had to endure so much. Yet despite all that he has been through, Noah still has spunk.
So this afternoon the nurse came in and said that he had to get up and go for a walk. This was the last thing that Noah wanted to do. He has to wear a mask when he leaves the room and Lara told Noah that he looked scary in it. That’s all he needed to hear. He was up and ready to scare everyone with his mask. He made two rounds down the halls and scaring everyone in his path.
Boo to you too, Noah. We’re rooting for you.
