UK DNA Banking Network

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on December 4th, 2005

Calling itself a “scientists’ dating agency and shop,” the UK DNA Banking Network has been collecting blood samples from patients for DNA analysis. Primarily focusing on case-control studies where the genetic make-up of people with a specific disease is compared to those without the disease, the Network is currently concentrating on the following:

  • Acute Leukaemia
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Asthma and eczema
  • Breast cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Hypertension
  • Late onset Alzheimer’s disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Unipolar depression

Registered scientists have access to data and materials and can “date” other scientists from both laboratories and medical clinics. Teams of researchers then design experiments and are able to post a wishlist of desired DNA online at the Network website. If scientists are truly willing to share their hard-earned data, the power of studies to detect gene-disease associations will grow exponentially.
