Dr. Anita Goel - Studying DNA Using Physics

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on December 9th, 2005

Anita Goel, MD, PhD, is another example of a polymath who is able to combine seemingly disparate disciplines to understand natural phenomena - physics and genetics. Named one of the world’s 35 most promising researchers under the age of 35 by MIT’s Technology Review Magazine, Dr. Goel of Harvard University is studying how DNA polymerase replicates DNA.

“There’s this sense of wonder, with a lot of nature around you,” Goel said. “We understand so much about atoms and molecules, but do we really understand the basic physics of life?”

Dr. Goel likens DNA polymerase to a nanoscale motor that converts chemical energy into mechanical energy as it moves along a strand of DNA. In addition to studying DNA replication, she is developing new methods for detecting viruses and bacteria with potential use in counter-terrorism. This work is performed with her company, Nanobiosym.

    Counter terrorism sounds real good, but let’s be more pragmatic and start developing cures for known diseases such as HIV and cancer. That would be something really useful.

    THESIS WORK

    We know,

    from HEISENBERG’S UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE,

    delta E* dalta t=h/2pi;
    =6.023*10^-23/2pi;
    Also, we know, 6 fragments of dna make’ LIFE’.

    2pi is measure of one cycle or circle.

    According to Bose-Einstein,

    life or soul’ is made of cooper-pairs.

    Here, we take 1 Helical turn as one cycle or

    circle. As cooper pairs are RESONATING,they are

    not perfect circles,but helical.They exhibit

    electromagnetic properties.

    Also,23/6.023=3.5, which is distance between 2

    base pairs.Here 23 is negative power of the equation.

    Hence life can be made of 6 circles,or 3 cooper

    pairs(6 DNA TURNS),2pi foir 1 circle,or 1 helical

    turn.As, structure is helical,’ sign’(greater or

    equal to) is used in Heisenberg’s equation.

    The waveform configuration of cooper-pair shows

    superimposition of 2 waves coming from opposite

    directions, as in DNA where 2 strands are in 5-3′

    AND 3′-5′.
