Non-Invasive DNA Test for Colorectal Cancer
Epigenomics AG, a molecular diagnostics company developing tests based on DNA methylation, together with Roche Diagnostics has developed a blood-based colorectal cancer test for a single DNA methylation “anchor” marker. The test is designed for asymptomatic men and women over the age of 50 who should be screened for colorectal cancer on a regular basis.
Early-stage cancers were identified with the same sensitivity as later stage cancers, proving the utility of this approach for general population screening. In addition, the test was able to detect colorectal cancers regardless of their location, addressing a critical medical need and shortfall of the existing fecal occult blood tests (FOBT), currently the most widely used screening test.
Earlier this year, Dr. Bert Volgestein at Johns Hopkins developed a blood test that can detect elevated levels of mutated adenomatous polyposis coli gene (APC).
