This week’s genetics quiz questions:

1. What percent of births result in congenital malformations?

2. What percent of mental retardation has a genetic basis?

3. What percent of all cancers have an inherited susceptibility? What percent of chronic diseases, such as heart, diabetes, and arthritis?

Answers:


1. 3-5% of all births result in congenital malformations

2. 50% of mental retardation has a genetic basis

3. 15% of all cancers have an inherited susceptibility.

10% of the chronic diseases which occur in adult populations have a significant genetic component.
