Saturday Genetics Quiz #35: Linkage Analysis

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on April 15th, 2006

Earlier this week, I mentioned the use of linkage analysis to find an association between chromosome 17 and opioid addiction. So this week’s genetics quiz question is:

What is linkage analysis?

Answer:

Linkage analysis is a statistical method that follows the co-inheritance of a genetic marker with the trait of interest. For instance, a researcher might pick a section of DNA to trace and see if a specific sequence in that area (like ATCGA) appears to be associated with hat head. (I hope nobody studies this but you just never know nowadays!)

For a more technical explanation and a diagram, see GeneTests.
