Genetic Non-Info
When you read about genetics such as this 96-word story (I’ve truncated a few words so as not to violate copyright) at ABC News Online, what crosses your mind?
Brain tumour research uncovers new genes
Australian researchers have found new information about why some brain tumours are more deadly than others.
More than 400 brain tumour samples are stored in a human tissue bank at the Kolling Institute at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital.
Using genetic screening, scientists discovered three new genes, which control how aggressive tumours are.
Dr Kerrie McDonald says the discovery will help doctors to find the best treatments for individual patients.
This is what I thought…
Big whoop. The story doesn’t tell us anything about which genes and what biologic pathways they’re involved in. It doesn’t say anything about the frequency of the specific gene variants that promote aggressive tumor growth. And it gives a blanket statement about finding best treatments. Does the average person understand how genetic information can be used to target drugs and other forms of therapy?
What a waste of web space. So I’m cranky this week.
