DNA Direct’s Genes & Drugs
One of the genome revolution’s greatest gifts to each of us will be personalized medicine tailor made for our unique genetic make-up. DNA Direct has already begun with the grand opening of their new website - Genes & Drugs.
Many factors affect how we respond to medication, including age, gender, underlying medical problems, and interactions with other drugs. Even when all these factors are taken into account, there seems to be an additional “wild card” that affects drug response. That something else tends to run in families. That something else is genetics.
Currently, Genes & Drugs is purely an educational site with information on specific genes, drugs, and explanations of how genes affect drugs. Later on, they plan to provide genetic testing for drug response that will be available to the average consumer. One of the first tests may be one that differentiates between fast and slow metabolizers of codeine into morphine. Breastfeeding mothers who are fast metabolizers carrying a variant of the CYP2D6 gene need to pay special attention because their infants could be in danger of receiving a fatal overdose o f morphine.
Having been in contact with Lisa Lee and Jason Bobe of DNA Direct, I believe DNA Direct is a sincere company that is trying to make a difference in the way we understand and utilize genetic information. Knowing more about genetics and health will empower YOU to take advantage of what’s to come in the genome revolution.
