Pictish Y Chromosome Test
Ethnoancestry is planning to launch a $249 Pictish Y Chromosome Test this week. It’s a way for men to see whether they descend from the Picts, colonisers of Scotland at the end of the last ice age.
Developer of the DNA test for “Scottishness,” Dr. Jim Wilson of Edingburgh University:
The test will appeal to the US and Australian markets, who want to confirm their Scottish roots, but also to people in Scotland and elsewhere in the British Isles to see whether they have Pictish, British, Anglo-Saxon or Viking roots.
The Sunday Times reports that genealogy tourism is worth more than “£150m a year to the Scottish economy, with 97% of visitors making repeat trips.”
I don’t know that much about my ancestors and have never really been interested in genealogy either. If you’ve done some research into your ancestors’ lives, can you tell me what motivated you to do so?

I’m pretty sure my father would have done this, as I grew up on bagpipes, Scottish Games and kilts. In fact, I discovered my last name was spelled in the “Irish” configuration and it nearly traumatized me!
I think Dad would have gotten tested and been quite upset if he was “negative”.
My husband is into his genealogy BIG TIME; spent a fair amount of time in Ireland looking in cemetaries for old relatives….I’m interested in about four generations back because these are the ones I heard about or knew!

Kim: Your family history must feel so alive to you. My parents don’t talk about our ancestors much. I hardly even know anything about my closest relatives! I wonder how much of that is true for recent immigrants.
