HLA-B Gene and Schizophrenia

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on September 30th, 2006

A recent study in the American Journal of Human Genetics has found that daughters whose HLA-B gene matched their mothers have a 70 percent higher risk of developing schizophrenia. Forbes quotes the researchers:

If this risk factor could be removed, up to 12 percent of cases of schizophrenia in daughters might be prevented.

I don’t dare say out loud how such a risk factor could be “removed.”
