UK Plan for the Practical Application of Genetics

by Hsien Hsien Lei, PhD on October 14th, 2006

The UK Department of Health is currently reviewing its June 2003 Genetics White Paper: Our inheritance, our future - realising the potential of genetics in the NHS. The results of the review will be published in early 2007.

The aim of this White Paper is to set out a vision of how patients could benefit in future from advances in genetics, and raise awareness of the potential of genetics in healthcare; includes a £50m three-year plan of implementation.

The UK National Health Service (NHS) provides free healthcare for all the residents of the UK so it makes sense for them to have a universal set of guidelines for how to take advantage of genetic technology. Does anyone know if a similar plan has been drawn up by other governments, including the U.S.?
