UK Genomics Research Center Innogen Receives £5 million
A billion here and a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money.
~Everett Dirksen
In this case, it would be a million here, a million there. The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has just announced that Innogen–part of the ESRC Genomics Network–will be receiving £5 million over the next five years. What in the world could require so much money?
Their main objectives:
- Conduct fundamental and applied social science research.
- Engage the scientific community and wider stakeholders.
- Shape the socio-technical development of the life science trajectory.
Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo if you ask me. Here are some of their research projects:
- Generation and Organisation of Genetic Information
- 21st Century Genetic Health
- Animal Cloning and Genetic Modification: a Prospective Study
- The Social Dynamics of Public Engagement in Stem Cell Research
- The National and International Policy Environment for Genomics
I could get into some of this. But, wow, for a thinktank that doesn’t actually engage in laboratory work requiring high tech, highly priced equipment, five million pounds (about 9.5 million USD) seems like a whole lot of money. Maybe it’s time to invite someone from Innogen to participate in the Genetics and Health interview series.
