The Five Tenets of Nutrigenomics
According to Dr. Jim Kaput at Nutrigenomics: The New Science of Genes, Nutrition, and Health Symposium.
- Improper diets are risk factors for diseases
- Dietary chemicals alter gene expression and/or genome structure
- Influence of diet on health depends upon an individual’s genetic makeup
- Genes regulated by diet play a role in chronic diseases
- “Individualized nutrition” - diets based upon genotype, nutritional requirements and status - prevents and mitigates chronic disease.”
He believes that nutrigenomic products will be developed that will make everyone healthier, reduce their need for medical care, and thus save consumers money. He stopped short of saying, “Invest in my company.”*
*Just kidding.

Sigh, if only we had the evidence - I know, cynical me. Too bad the smokers who took beta-carotene got more lung cancer…
Any evidence that this stuff is being funded?

Interesting… I’m feeling a it skeptical, but reserving judgment for now.

Emily: Oh yes, you betcha! Lots of funding. Anything involving DNA is hot, remember? ;) And not to mention that anything involving diet is a big seller.
Kristen: I think some people do feel motivated by seeing so hard numbers from DNA testing so if people have some money to burn, why not? None of the nutrigenomic testing companies would dare to come out with anything definitively saying that X genetic variant is 100% involved in causing Y cancer UNLESS you eat lots of brussel sprouts. :P

To respond to Emily
The whole point of nutrigenomics is to determine why some people (say smokers) are able to maintain a specific lifestyle but not develop disease, while others who may lead very healthy lifestyles do.
