Science Scout Badges
I want to be a science scout too! Hope it’s more fun than Girl Scouts (boo to that mean girl back in fourth grade). Thanks to The Science Creative Quarterly for the badges. Read them all to really appreciate the true craziness of scientists.
The “cloner” badge. I AM DNA. (Oh, and so are you. Although one of us might have extraterrestrial DNA.)
The “sexing up science” badge. Anyone who has written about genetics and its connection with Kate Moss’s underwear, Jennifer Garner, and the Jolie-Pitts deserves this badge.
The “I can be a prick when it comes to science” badge. I am naturally surly, rude, and/or unpleasant even when I’m not talking about science. :D
The “talking science” and “I blog about science” badges. Yup. That’s me. I talk science ALL THE TIME. Even to my waiter. I even talked about the stickiness of starch to my son’s kindergarten class this morning. Yay! I’m a star.
The “MacGyver” badge. I once used PCR beads instead of mixing my own reagent. Money buys convenience.
The “my degree inadvertantly makes me competent in fixing household appliances” badge. I almost electrocuted myself once while rewiring the vacuum’s plug.
The “pharma shill” badge. Personalized medicine is the wave of the future! Can’t you hear the brass band play?
The “experienced with electrical shock” badge (LEVEL I). I have electroporated malaria parasites. TAKE THAT, SUCKAHS!

Geez, which ones haven’t I earned. I haven’t seen the “handled mutagenic chemicals and still had normal kids” badges.
Let’s see, I’ve burned things, frozen things, dissolved things, fixed things, shocked myself (more than once, and once on purpose), been published … hmm, blown things up, that depends.

Awesome post! Too funny. I almost qualify for the Nature/Science badge. Does it count if I was thanked for my sequencing expertise in Science? I did generate the sequencing data after all. I suppose it doesn’t. :)
I want to see the “have spilled infectious bodily fluids all over myself and survived” badge.
