Schizophrenia is a by-product of evolution
Further to my article on schizophrenia…
Schizophrenia is a frightening and debilitating condition for the sufferer, their families and the community in which the sufferer lives. Around 1% of the total world population goes on to develop the condition. There is now compelling evidence that it is genetic based and at present there are around 76 genetic markers identified with the risk of developing schizophrenia.
Scientists have long questioned why schizophrenia has not been naturally ‘bred out’ of humans through the evolutionary process. It is now thought that schizophrenia is a natural by-product (albeit a bad one) of human evolution where man becomes creative and inventive. There is similar thinking with autism.
