New genetic technology reveals mushroom poison
The death cap mushroom produces a nasty poisonous toxin called Alpha-amanitin. This toxin inhibits the enzyme necessary for the expression of most genes. Without the ability to make new proteins, cells quickly grind to a halt.
It was previously thought that a large gene must be responsible for making the enzyme producing alpha amanitin. However, latest gene sequencing technology has shown that it is a remarkably small gene that produces the toxin, which has surprised scientists.
