DiaGenic’s Breast Cancer early detection test offered by Opaldia UK

by Elaine on December 15th, 2007

 DiaGenic

My team and I at Opaldia are reeling with the amazing world-wide press we have received for partnering and supporting the development and distribution of DiaGenic’s  breast cancer early detection test, through our national network of breast clinics.

The Scientific Team at DiaGenic, headed up by MD Erik Christensen, are developing a number of disease specific gene signatures, the first of which to become commercially available  is an expression array for the early detection of breast cancer from a blood sample.

The simplest explanation of the DiaGenic test is that it works by ‘tapping’ into the body’s own genetic based alarm system for breast cancer.  When the body detects cancerous cells it will switch on genes to defend itself against the cancer.  By screening the blood, the test is able to detect the early warning signals for the presence of breast cancer - often a couple of years earlier than the tumor showing up on a mammogram.

Many of the cancer charities are most interested in further validating this test within a screening programme.

Please follow this link to the Sky News report which gives further details and a video report on the test.

The test will be available in 2008 and I’ll keep you updated with progress.
